Last month, Time Out (16 September 2024) featured “The 18 Best Things to Do on Kangaroo Island,” and we loved all their suggestions! However, it got me reflecting on my own favorite activities on this stunning island.
When it comes to Kangaroo Island, I am absolutely devoted to Emu Bay. You’ll have to forgive the pun—Richard and I actually got married there, having first met on the beach in front of Dune House! After visiting many of the world’s incredible beaches, Emu Bay stands out as my all-time favorite. Despite the numerous attractions on Kangaroo Island, I find it hard to leave the Bay.
Emu Bay is famous for its fine, well-packed sand—ideal for walking, running, and even driving. No day at Emu Bay is complete without a walk along its stunning length. Whether you start your day early to get your heart pumping before breakfast or take a leisurely stroll back in time for lunch, it’s the perfect way to kick off your day. Plus, you’ll feel justified indulging in the delicious home-cooked meals and local wines that make every holiday at Hamilton & Dune unforgettable. Outside of the Christmas and New Year rush, you’ll enjoy a sense of solitude, often sharing smiles with fellow beachgoers and exchanging sentiments like “this is the life” or “how lucky are we.” Every walk along Emu Bay feels like a special experience.
As you stroll along Emu Bay, keep an eye out for a unique landmark at the far end: a rocky formation resembling a bald, bearded man lying back and gazing up at the sky. Locals affectionately call it “Baldy” or “Skull Rock.”
About a third of the way down the beach, you’ll find rocky outcrops with sandy dunes. If you can, climb to the top for a breathtaking view. There’s nothing quite like watching the sunset during golden hour, perhaps with a glass of wine in hand.
Thanks to the island's isolation, Emu Bay's water is clean and pure. Typically calm, its protected north-facing location means that on still days, the water boasts an enchanting clarity and turquoise hue. It beckons for a refreshing swim, with seaweed-free stretches that are perfect for floating on hot summer days.
For a unique perspective of Emu Bay's stunning clarity, try paddleboarding along the shoreline! You’ll be able to see every ripple on the sandy bottom and spot schools of tiny fish swimming beneath you.
Snorkeling over the shallow reefs near the beach is a hit with kids, and if you're up for an adventure, drive to the far end of Emu Bay. Explore the rocky outcrops, discover tide pools and caves, and marvel at your very own natural aquarium. Just be mindful of the tides, as the rocky outcrop near the end can obstruct vehicle passage.
For the ultimate private beach experience, venture further over the rocks at the beach's end until you discover your own sandy haven. Admire the unique, rounded Emu Egg-shaped rocks piled at the high tide mark—rumored to be the inspiration behind Emu Bay's name. For the curious, continue toward what we call “the Double Arch” and “Blow Hole” (note: the blow hole only functions during winter's high tide). While it may not rival Admiral’s Arch, it’s a perfect example of nature’s magnificence.
If you’re adventurous enough to reach Baldy, you might even dare to climb over his neck to access the private beach known as “Amans” (named during a day of exploration by my niece Amelia and daughter Annabel). This hidden gem is accessible only by climbing over Baldy or by boat, and a swim here will stay with you long after your stay at Hamilton & Dune is over.
Emu Bay is not just a destination; it’s an experience filled with unforgettable moments and breathtaking beauty. Whether you’re walking along its shores, soaking in the views, or enjoying the clear waters, every visit creates cherished memories. If you’re planning a trip to Kangaroo Island, make sure Emu Bay is at the top of your list—trust me, you won’t regret it!
